A Zr-Metal-Organic Framework Catalyst for Oxidative Desulfurization and Its Improvement by Crystal Engineering Approach

Sulfur oxides (SOx) are one of the major air pollutants, which originally come from the combustion of transportation fuels containing sulfur compounds. Oxidative desulfurization (ODS) is a method in which sulfur compounds are first oxidized to sulfoxides or sulfones, then are removed by extraction using a polar solvent [1-3]. In this work, we have utilized UiO-66, a Zr-based MOF, as catalyst to remove sulfur compounds from model oil/real fuel. The Zr-oxoclusters in the structure of UiO-66 react with H2O2 to form ZrIV-peroxo complexes as active species for ODS [4]. By varying synthetic conditions through “coordination modulation”, we succeeded to create a larger number of ZrIV sites bringing enhanced catalytic activity to the ODS reaction [5]. Accordingly, benzoic acid was employed as modulating agent to create defect sites in the structure. Our primary results indicate that the modulated-UiO-66 exhibits higher catalytic activity in comparison with neat UiO-66 and some typical catalysts.
