TiO2 Nanotube Supported ZIF-8: A Novel Photocatalyst for Azo Dye Degradation from Aqueous Solution

On the other hand, MOFs are new advanced porous crystalline complexes, which consist of various metal ion/clusters and organic ligands. They have unique structures possessing large porosity, high surface area and structural tailorability [1], that make them have great potential in different applications, particularly in liquid-phase adsorptive separation, water purification, environmental remediation [1]. Controllable conjunction of semiconductors with metal organic frameworks (MOFs) has been an efficient tool to enhance the chemical and physical properties of semiconductors by forming semiconductor– MOF hybrid structures.
In particular, ZIF-8 is a most widely used MOFs, due to its low cost, easily synthesis, high chemical and thermal stability and large surface area (~1600 m2 g−1) [2]. Herein, a novel MOFs-derived strategy to fabricate TiO2 nanotube/ZIF-8 hybrid photocatalyst via the micro-catalysis technique by using ZIF-8 as a precursor and TiO2 as a catalyst is reported. The as-prepared TiO2 nanotubes/ZIF-8 hybrid photocatalyst was characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, EDX, UV-vis, BET techniques. The results demonstrated the successful synthesis and interaction of ZIF-8 and TiO2 nanotubes. The photocatalytic performance of prepared nanohybrid was evaluated by degradation of Methyl Orange (MO), as an anionic dye model, from aqueous solution under UV light. The results indicated that TiO2 nanotube/ZIF-8 nanohybrid exhibit excellent photocatalytic properties in the fast degradation of MO. Relying on the combined effect of their structure, the photodegradation efficiency of TiO2 nanotubes/ZIF-8 catalyst was obviously superior to that of pure TiO2 for degradation of MO under UV-light irradiation.
