Methylene Blue Adsorption by POM based ionic liquid encapsulated ZIF-8

چکیده مقاله:
In these years, the ionic liquids (ILs), a kind of eco-friendly salts, have received much attention in various research topics. They generally composed of organic cations and (in)organic anions, which possess fascinating properties [1]. On the other hand, MOFs are new advanced porous crystalline complexes, which consist of various metal ion/clusters and organic ligands. They have unique structures possessing large porosity, high surface area [2], that make them have great potential in different applications, particularly in liquid-phase adsorptive separation, water purification and etc.[2]. In particular, ZIF-8 is a most widely used MOFs, due to its low cost, easily synthesis [3].
The aim of this work is to seek the encapsulation of ZIF-8 with a POM based ionic liquid (BmImBr) to a novel adsorbent for dye removal from aqueous solutions. For this aim, an organic–inorganic hybrid material, consisted of inorganic POMs containing Keggin anion and a cation ILs, was synthesized in ZIF-8. The adsorption performance of ZIF-8-[Bmim]3PW12O40 was studied in removal of methylene blue (MB). The prepared ZIF-8-[Bmim]3PW12O40 was characterized by XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDX and BET analyses, which confirmed the successfully insertion of POM-IL onto the surface of ZIF-8 structure.
It was also revealed that the prepared are efficient adsorbent for the removal of MB from aqueous solution with the removal percentage of 95% within 45 min in the wide pH range of 2-11, in which the removal was increased with increasing of sorbent dosage. Furthermore, it was indicated that the adsorption kinetic of MB onto adsorbent well followed pseudo-first-order.
