Hexadecylamine modified zeolite: effective adsorbent for the removal of Congo Red

چکیده مقاله:
Zeolites are crystalline microporous aluminosilicates consisting more than 230 different naturally occurring and synthetic frameworks with a wide variety of shapes (cages, channels, cavities, etc.).[1]. Owing to the chemical composition, featured porous structure, high surface area and high cation exchange capacity, they are widely used in various filed of applications [2]. Their microporosity makes them efficient, low cost and highly selective adsorbent toward diverse (in)organic contaminants from aqueous solutions with high adsorption capacity and regenerability features [3].
Due to their aluminosilicate structure, they are negatively charged [3] and it is possible to easily manipulate their surface characteristics with the positively charged groups to enhance their capability of anion adsorption properties. Thus, their surface can be modified by cationic surfactants, through cation exchange and hydrophobic bonding mechanisms [4].
Our observation showed that zeolite has very low affinity for CR dye in aqueous solution. The purpose of the present study was to study the possibility to modify the zeolite surface with Hexadecylamine surfactant (HAD) and examine its adsorption behavior in the removal of Congo Red (CR) from aquatic media. Our results revealed that the HDA functionalization of zeolite intensively enhanced its adsorption towards CR in the wide pH range of 2-11. The optimum adsorbent amount was determined to be 2 mg / L and the highest adsorption of CR by adsorbent occurred at pH = 8 with an adsorbent efficiency of 99%. Also, the kinetic adsorption and isotherm studies showed that they followed the pseudo-second order and Langmuir models, respectively.
