Natrolite zeolite as an efficient catalyst for the synthesis of 2H-indazolo[2,1-b]phthalazine-trione derivatives

In the past few decades, the synthesis of new heterocyclic compounds has received much attention due to their widespread use. Heterocyclic compounds are widespread in nature and are essential for life. Among a wide range of heterocyclic compounds, heterocycles containing phthalazine are of interest because they exhibit some pharmacological and biological activity. The use of natrolite zeolites in organic synthesis is noteworthy since they are compatible with the reactants, ecofriendly, non-toxic, non-corrosive, insoluble in many solvents, resistive at high temperatures, and reusable with high yield and purity. Natrolite zeolite was explored as an efficient catalyst to promote the three-component reaction of aryl aldehydes, dimedone and phthalhydrazide to afford the corresponding 2H-indazolo[2,1-b]phthalazine-trione derivatives in high yields. The reactions were conducted at 100 ºC under solvent-free conditions. Natural Natrolite zeolite as a non-toxic, available and inexpensive catalyst was quantitatively recovered from the reaction by simple filtration and reused for a number of cycles with almost consistent activity.
