Modulator effect on the crystallinity of metal-organic frames UiO-66

During the last decade, UiO-66 as a member of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted great attention [1-5]. Crystallinity is considered as an important index of formation of the MOFs. Good crystallinity and presence of defects in MOFs can be related to the different parameters during the post-synthetic procedure. In this report, systematic investigation on the effect of various monocarboxylic acids as a modulator in the synthesis of UiO-66 was performed and the results demonstrated that high crystallinity of the product is achieved by using butyric acid. Also, the results indicated that total yields are affected by crystallinity values. PXRD patterns of the synthesized MOFs are quantified in this work by adding an internal standard which should has high crystallinity with no overlap peaks with mother MOF. The accuracy of this method was confirmed by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). The results represented a considerable correlation between the crystallinity of the products and pKa of the modulator acids. Furthermore, the statistical method was applied to discover better insight on the effect of the modulator on the final crystallinity and revealed that although the acidic constant of a modulator is one of the parameters on the crystallinity values but it is not the key parameter.
