Surface modification of zeolite for removal of nitrate from drinking water

چکیده مقاله:
Zeolites are three-dimensional crystalline aluminosilicates with corner-sharing [SiO4]4- and [AlO4]5- tetrahedra frameworks forming channels and cages in the structures. Zeolites have a large surface area and high cation exchange capacity. The capacity of natural zeolites to absorb anionic pollutants from water is limited. This limitation can be overcome by modifying the surface of the zeolites with inorganic cations. In this research, natural zeolite, clinoptilolite was modified by iron hydroxide to increase the capacity of the samples to absorb the anions. The samples were prepared by chemical co-precipitation and sono chemical methods. Then the as synthesized nanocomposite was used to remove nitrate from drinking water. The sorption characteristics of nitrate on iron hydroxide- clinoptilolite nanocomposite were investigated through batch studies. Batch adsorption experiments were conducted, where the influence of several parameters such as pH, contact time, adsorbent amount, and nitrate concentration were studied. The structure of nanocomposites order, textural and surface area properties were examined using XRD, FTIR, SEM, EDX and sorption characteristics of nitrate evaluate using UV-Vis spectroscopy.
