Synthesis and characterization of aluminium-free MFI-type Cobaltosilicate nanosheets using hydrothermal method

In this research, we approached the synthesis of MFI nanosheets using a facile one-step hydrothermal method by designing the structure-directing ability of a diquaternary ammonium-type surfactant, C22H45-N+(CH3)2-C6H12-N+(CH3)2-C6H13 (designated C22-6-6 hereafter). The C22-6-6 surfactant was synthesized in the bromide, C22-6-6Br2, form. This surfactant was mixed with tetraethylorthosilicate (or sodium silicates), cobalt (II) nitrate, NaOH, H2SO4 and distilled water. This mixture was heated at 150 °C for several days in an autoclave (set on ‘tumbling’), to obtain the multilamellar MFI zeolite. Direct evidence of the incorporation of cobalt cations in the framework of zeolite nanosheets was observed by performing structure parameter refinements, and supported by data collected from other characterization techniques such as: X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). SEM images revealed that the particle size of zeolites and their morphology can be controlled by different synthesis parameters. The experimental results show that [Co]-MFI zeolite nanosheets were successfully synthesized.
