|Citrate-Stabilized nano Fe3O4/ Borosilicate Zeolite Composites as Efficient Drug Delivery Systems|

|Heteroatom incorporated zeolites have been attracted most attention due to their unique performance as acid and redox catalysts [1, 2]. Among them, borosilicate zeolites have also been considered as efficient drug delivery systems (DDSs); they are biocompatible according to the results of cytotoxicity studies and can serve as pH-sensitive drug carriers . In this work MFI-type borosilicate zeolite ([B]-MFI) was used as a support for preparation of citrate-stabilized nano Fe3O4/[B]-MFI composites with different Fe3O4 content (5 and 10% wt.). XRD patterns and SEM images of composites confirmed the formation and uniform dispersion of Fe3O4 nanoparticles on the external surface of [B]-MFI zeolite. |
The prepared composites were applied as DDSs for adsorption and release of doxorubicin (DOX). Loading efficiencies were about 63, 25 and 27% for composites with 10, 5 and 0% wt. Fe3O4, respectively. These results exhibit that the loading efficiency increases by increasing Fe3O4 content. On contrary, the release efficiency decreased by increasing Fe3O4 content that proves the presence of a strong interaction between DOX molecules and Fe3O4 nanoparticles. The composites also showed a pH-dependant release behavior with the highest DOX release at pH=5.7. This provides the opportunity for controlled release of drug molecules in vicinity of cancer cells.
