Degradation of methylene blue by GQD-zeolite composite under visible light radiation

Zeolites are inorganic polymers that may be obtained from natural deposits or through chemical synthesis. These microporous materials can be used as catalyst or substrate for other catalysts. Zeolites with a considerable ion exchange capacity were also identified as suitable adsorbents. In this study, we utilized natural zeolite as substrate for graphene quantum dots (GQDs). GQDs are small pieces of graphene with a 3-dimensional lateral size (less than 10 nm), which have been developed in recent years due to their interesting properties. GQDs possess unique optical and electronic properties. The band gap energy of the GQDs can be regulated from 0 to 6 eV by changing the two-dimensional size or surface chemical properties, due to the quantum confinement effect of conjugated π-domains and the edge effect. In this work, GQD-zeolite composite was prepared and characterized by XRD and FT-IR techniques. This composite could remove methylene blue (MB) from water under visible light radiation in 120 min as confirmed by monitoring the removal process using UV-Vis spectroscopy.
