Formation of new fiber via interpolymer complexes between rGO and PEO and used as an adsorbent

In this research, a new interpolymer complex via hydrogen bonding between reduced graphene oxide (rGO) and polyethylene oxide (PEO) as fiber was synthesized [1]. This fiber was characterized and used as an adsorbent for removal of pb(II). The complexation behaviors of polymer and reduced graphene oxide at different pH values are examined [2]. The result shows that the optimum condition for the formation of interpolymer complex in ambient temperature is at pH 6.0. The adsorption experiments showed that the adsorption process toward Pb(II) by rGO/PEO fibers followed pseudo-second-order model and Langmuir isotherm model. The maximum adsorption capacity calculated from the Langmuir model was 200.20 mg g-1, which is higher than most of the reported by other authors. In addition, the fiber adsorbent could also adsorb Pb (II) from real industrial effluent with removal efficiency above 97%. This work indicates that rGO/PEO fibers have great potential to be used as effective adsorbents for practical Pb(II) removal.
