UiO-66 coupled with BiFeO3 as a photocatalyst for visible-light promoted dye degradation

Recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been arousing a great interest as a suitable material to develop in the combine photocatalysts [1-3]. Specifically, the superior thermal stability and unique physicochemical properties of UiO-66, a zirconium-based MOF, makes it a promising candidate for the photocatalysis process. This report provides the first attempt to incorporate UiO-66 with BiFeO3 by a one-pot solvothermal method for the development of visible-light photocatalysts. The MOF/BiFeO3 composite samples, pure MOF and BiFeO3 were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and UV–vis spectrophotometry. The results reveal that MOF/BiFeO3 composite has better photocatalytic behavior for degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) under the visible-light irradiation compared to bare MOF and pure BiFeO3. The improvement of photocatalytic performance should be attributed not only to the high surface area of MOF which increase the contact area with RhB but also to the construction of a junction between MOF and BiFeO3 which increase the availability of charge careers (electrons and holes). This composing strategy of MOF/BiFeO3 composite may bring new insight into the designing of highly efficient photocatalysts.
