Synthesis and characterization of Cobalt-based metal-organic framework TMU-10 as an efficient adsorbent for phenol removal

In this paper, we report series of [Co6(oba)5(OH)2(H2O)2(DMF)4]n•5DMF (TMU-10) material were synthesized using a solvothermal method under different temperature and time conditions and were used as adsorbents for degrade pollutions of wastewater. Crystalline metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are formed by reticular synthesis, which creates strong bonds between inorganic and organic units. Careful selection of MOF constituents can yield crystals of ultrahigh porosity and high thermal and chemical stability. The extension of synthesis time can increase the crystallinity of the samples which was caused by the reduction of BET surface area and the amount of Co-coordinative unsaturated sites. Surface area of TMU-10 was obtained as 130 m2/g. The adsorbent was characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM and N2 adsorption/desorption measurement. The selectivity test of phenol shows that π−π interactions between organic linkers of TMU-10 and the aromatic ring of phenol are responsible for the adsorption phenol process and the main part of adsorption takes place on unsaturated site around Co center. The practical feasibility of MOFs is possible owing to their abilities for excellent porosity, high loading capacity, ease of surface modification, among others. The used TMU-10 could be regenerated effectively and recycled without significant loss of adsorption capacity.
