Highly efficient removal of lead from water and wastewater using polyacrylonitrile nanofiber

Lead is one the toxic element and non-biodegradable. Therefore, removing it by a new and practical technique is essential. Nanostructured materials have recently been considered as the finest adsorbents, offering excellent metal binding sites owing to their outstanding high specific surface area-to-volume ratio [1,2]. In this work, polyacrylonitrile (PAN) was selected as base polymer for electrospinning process to obtain easily modifiable and versatile nanofibers able to remove selectively heavy metal ions from contaminated effluents. Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) is an industrial by-product with abundant nitrile groups (C≡N) [3,4]. However, raw polyacrylonitrile shows almost no binding ability toward metal ions. were grafted in a stable and homogeneous way by a two steps grafting process which involves hydrolysis and chemical modification with ethylenediamine (EDA) resulting in one ion-selective nanofibrous materials. The nanofibers thus obtained were characterized through ATR-FTIR (Table 1) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) and were analyzed for their adsorption capability for Pb2+ ions. Nanofibers morphology was characterized by SEM (Table 2). Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were applied to analyze the experimental data. The adsorption experiments in batch mode were performed by mixing 100 mL of Pb2+ aqueous solution in a concentration 0.1, 1 and 10 mg/L. Using atomic absorption spectroscopy, the concentration of aqueous solution after removal of lead by polyacrylonitrile nanofibers was measured (Table 3).
