Catalytic Cracking Process over Mesoporous-Zeolite Materials Using HZSM-5 Zeolite: A Comparative Study

The catalytic cracking of n-heptane (as a model of paraffinic naphtha) was investigated over hybrid HZSM-5/HMS and its promoted micro-mesoporous structure, in order to verify the effect of the acid site of the accessibility of mesoporous channels combined with the acid sites into the zeolite. The obtained materials were characterized by various methods that presented characteristic peaks of the microporous and mesoporous phases. The calcined hybrid materials were tested as a catalyst for cracking of n-heptane, using a fixed bed reactor at 200-350 °C and hydrogen gas. The catalytic tests showed that the Pt/HZSM-5/HMS hybrid catalyst has the potential for use in cracking reactions, being more active than the zeolite or HMS alone. This catalyst has high n-heptane cracking selectivity (63.40%) and conversion (88.4%), achieving the highest yield (51.62%) among all samples. But the outstanding performance of the Pt-HZSM-5/Al-HMS composite in low cracking conversion resulted from the excellent surface area and acidity property. This low cracking production is the desired property. These results show that the promotion with Al decreases the cracking productions.
